Unexpected exit: K Satchidanandan resigns as Sahitya Akademi President days before term ends

THRISSUR: Renowned poet and critic K. Satchidanandan has stepped down from his position as the President of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, submitting his resignation just weeks before his tenure was scheduled to end on May 31. His sudden departure follows a series of candid remarks regarding the political climate in Kerala and the Left Democratic Front's (LDF) performance in the recent elections.

Speaking to the press, Satchidanandan characterised his resignation as a standard procedure following a change in governance. However, his exit is underscored by his recent critique of the CPI(M)-led LDF, where he argued that the front has drifted away from its core leftist ideologies. "True leftists in Kerala realised that the election was essentially a contest between two right-wing entities," Satchidanandan noted, suggesting that even traditional supporters turned away from the LDF due to this ideological shift.

In a social media post, the poet emphasised that a radical transformation—both ideological and class-based—is imperative if the Left hopes to reclaim its influence. He also reaffirmed his stance against the concept of 'government continuity' (pro-incumbency), stating that prolonged power for a single coalition is detrimental to democratic health.

Accompanying the President in his exit, Ashokan Charuvil also tendered his resignation. Satchidanandan assumed the leadership of the Akademi in March 2022 and has been a prominent, albeit sometimes critical, voice within the state's cultural and political sphere.
