Another Shigella death reported in Kerala; Seven-year-old dies in Kozhikode

KOZHIKODE: Another death of Shigella has been reported in the state. A seven-year-old boy died while undergoing treatment at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. With this, the number of deaths from Shigella this year has touched four. The boy was admitted in the hospital on June 12 with high fever and diarrhea.


A four-and-a-half-year-old girl had earlier died of Shigella. She was identified as Nila, daughter of Babeesh of Thalakulathur. She was a LKG student. She died while undergoing treatment at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.

Meanwhile, Shigella cases are on the rise in the state. Shigella has been confirmed in 135 people so far this year. Of these, 68 cases are in Kozhikode. The health condition of a one-year-old boy presently undergoing treatment at the medical college remains critical. Meantime, in the wake of the death of a seven-year-old boy of Shigella, food safety department officials have informed that strict examinations will continue in Malappuram.
