THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A newly formed low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has raised concerns as the state is gearing up for the Onam celebrations. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has informed that Kerala is likely to receive heavy rainfall from today to August 27, following the formation of another low-pressure area over the northwestern Bay of Bengal.
Yellow alert has also been issued in various districts on August 23, 24 and 25. Isolated heavy rain is predicted. Heavy rain is defined as rainfall of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours.

The IMD warns that the rains may become heavier in the hilly areas. It has been advised not to go for fishing along the Kerala - Karnataka - Lakshadweep coasts from today till August 25.
As part of the black sea phenomenon, the National Oceanographic Information and Analysis Centre has informed that there is a possibility of sea erosion due to waves rising to 0.9 to 1.3 meters in the coasts of Thiruvananthapuram (from Kappil to Pozhiyur), Kollam (from Alappat to Edava), Alappuzha (from Chellanam to Azhikkal Jetty), Ernakulam (from Munambam FH to Maruvakkad), and Thrissur (from Attupuram to Kodungallur) districts till 11.30 pm tomorrow.
