THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V D Satheesan announced Rs 10 crore for a free health insurance scheme named after former chief minister Oommen Chandy. The announcement was made during the budget presentation in the assembly. Each family will get Rs 25 lakh through this scheme.
‘Unexpected medical expenses create a huge financial burden for many families. To ease this burden and help families, Oommen Chandy free health insurance scheme of Rs 25 lakh each will be implemented for all families. This is part of the Indira Guarantee. Ten crore rupees are being allocated for its initial expenses,' said VD Satheesan.
Governor Rajendra Arlekar had earlier announced this scheme in the first policy speech of the UDF government. The Oommen Chandy Free Health Insurance Scheme was one of the most important promises in the Indira Guarantee made by the UDF during election time. The Karunya scheme implemented by Oommen Chandy when he was the chief minister was a very comforting scheme for the common people of Kerala. The new scheme has been named after Oommen Chandy as part of its remembrance. The scheme, which was a big discussion during election time, has now been implemented. This scheme will be of great help to common families.
