Young lovers end lives by jumping into Sasthamcotta lake after families oppose relationship

KOLLAM: A young couple, believed to be in a relationship, died by suicide by jumping into the Sasthamcotta Lake after their families opposed their alliance. The two have been identified as Abhirami (19), daughter of M K Ani and Beena Kumari of Abhishek Bhavan at Maravankode IHDP Colony, Valiyode, and Rajeev (26) of Pooyappally.

The two jumped into the lake on Saturday evening. Their bodies were recovered on Sunday morning. Rajeev and Abhirami were in a relationship for quite some time. Their families opposed the relationship and had filed a complaint with the police.

When the couple was summoned to the police station the other day, they gave a written statement, signed by both of them, saying that they had decided to live together.
On Saturday evening, they reached the lakeside and took the extreme step. Their bags were found on the shore. The bodies have been shifted to Sasthamkotta Taluk Hospital.
