Rain to intensify in Kerala; alert issued in seven districts, people urged to exercise caution

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rain in Kerala for the next five days. Orange and yellow alerts have been issued for several districts. An orange alert has been announced for Kozhikode district today.

Very heavy rainfall is expected in isolated areas. According to the IMD, very heavy rain means rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm in 24 hours.

Yellow alert
The IMD has issued yellow alerts for the following districts:
17/06/2026: Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur
18/06/2026: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram
21/06/2026: Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod

Isolated heavy rainfall is expected in these districts. The IMD defines heavy rain as rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in 24 hours. Rain with thunderstorms is also expected.

Safety instructions for the public

  • People living in areas prone to landslides, mudslides, and flash floods should move to safer places as per the instructions of authorities.
  • People living near rivers and below dams should also shift to safer locations if required.
  • Residents in disaster-prone areas should confirm the availability of relief camps in their areas and move there during daytime if needed. They can contact local bodies and revenue officials for assistance.
  • People living in weak houses or houses with unsafe roofs should take extra care due to the possibility of strong winds. Those facing danger should move to safer places after contacting authorities.
  • People should be alert about accidents caused by falling trees and damaged electric poles. Safety instructions issued by the State Disaster Management Authority should be followed.
  • During heavy rain, people should not cross rivers or enter rivers and water bodies for swimming, fishing, or other activities.
  • People should avoid standing on bridges over water bodies for viewing floods, taking selfies, or gathering in groups.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall. Tourist trips to waterfalls, water bodies and hilly areas should be avoided until the weather warning is withdrawn.
  • People travelling on roads near water bodies should exercise caution. Extra caution is needed on roads under repair. Avoid diving through flooded roads.
  • Dangerous trees, poles, boards and walls in public and private areas should be secured. Authorities should be informed about unsafe conditions.
