Mini Cooper accident: Four including Suhail sent to police custody

KOCHI: Suhail Sajeev, Ninav, Joel and Ameen, the accused in the Nedumbassery accident that claimed the lives of three, have been sent to police custody. The Angamaly Magistrate Court has remanded the accused to police custody until 5 pm tomorrow.

Meantime, the defence opposed the police custody. The lawyers argued that the scooter involved in the accident was carrying three and none of them was wearing a helmet, which also contributed to the severity of the tragedy. The counsel urged the court to reject the police application, arguing that custody was not necessary in the case.

Even though the police say the conspiracy should be investigated, there is no evidence for it. The police are trying to take the accused into custody to manufacture evidence of a conspiracy. Travelling together in a car did not constitute evidence of a conspiracy, the defence argued, urging the court not to grant police custody. However, the court rejected these arguments. The defence also alleged that the media were sensationalizing the accident and that the police were acting to satisfy the media.

The prosecution, meanwhile, argued that driving under the influence of alcohol had led to the accident. The accused are all above 18 and cannot claim ignorance of the consequences of drunk driving, the prosecution said, countering arguments that their young age should be considered. The prosecution also pointed out that the victims who died in the accident were of a similar age and had dreams and aspirations of their own.
