KOZHIKODE: Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) state general secretary PMA Salam has called for the reorganisation of all districts in the state based on population.
“Malappuram, which has a larger population, and Pathanamthitta, which has a smaller population, have the same facilities. It is not just Malappuram; all districts with larger populations should be divided. If population is taken into consideration, Malappuram would have to be divided into three districts,” PMA Salam said.
Chief Minister VD Satheesan had said yesterday that the government was considering the creation of Muvattupuzha as a new district. He also announced that the government would soon appoint a delimitation commission to study the formation of new districts.
The announcement has raised hopes for demands to create three new districts in the state. Discussions are underway on dividing Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Malappuram districts to create Neyyattinkara, Muvattupuzha and Tirur as separate districts, respectively.
