KOCHI: The man arrested for setting fire to the main entrance of a Jewish synagogue in Ernakulam had links with Pakistan-based terrorists, according to the investigation. The accused has been identified as Ebin P. Paul (32), a native of Vadayampady, Aikaranad, Puthenkurish, in Kunnathunad. In his statement to the police, Ebin said he had known the person who allegedly motivated him to carry out the attack for only a month. He referred to the unidentified person as ‘Boss’.

Terrorists had reportedly planned to use Ebin to carry out bomb attacks in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Mumbai and Amritsar if the synagogue attack succeeded. Central and state intelligence agencies recovered a message sent by 'Boss' from Ebin's mobile phone, outlining the plan. Ebin received instructions to attack the synagogue through Telegram and Instagram. He was asked to carry out a ‘fire incident’. He was also sent a photograph of the synagogue and asked to seek approval before setting it on fire.

Following instructions to record the attack on video, Ebin switched on his mobile phone camera in front of the gate before setting it ablaze.

However, the identity of ‘Boss’ remains unknown. Ebin is suspected to have communicated with the person using the initials ‘SR’. The police have taken his mobile phone and laptop into custody. Charges related to terrorist activities will be invoked against the accused. Officials from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), the police anti-terror squad and the State Intelligence Department have questioned him.

'Had set fire to car showroom to prove capabilities'

Ebin told the police that he had set fire to a car showroom in Muvattupuzha in March to prove his capabilities. He was not arrested in that case. He received cryptocurrency after sending a video of the incident, and was promised money to carry out more attacks.

Ebin, who completed a fashion designing course in Pune, is said to be someone who generally keeps to himself at home. However, he is active on social media. The incident took place at 2.40 am on Monday, when the accused set fire to the entrance of the Kadavumbhagam Jewish Synagogue on Market Road in Ernakulam. The investigation is being led by Central ACP Sibi Tom and Inspector Aneesh Joy.
