THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said whoever tries to save the accused in the Mini Cooper accident, is not going to succeed. The minister while addressing the press clarified that the accused Suhail Sajeev was sent to the Borstal School by the court and not by the police.
‘Wrongdoers below the age of 21 are housed in Borstal schools. That is the law and it doesn’t mean that the accused has escaped from the case. The police are taking steps to ensure that he gets the maximum punishment prescribed by law. The families of the dead need not worry over that. Some people are misleading them by making various claims.
As a home minister, I assure that this accused will be given the maximum punishment possible. There is no doubt in that. People are saying that he is from Alappuzha. What difference does it make which district he belongs to? No minister will intervene to save him. He is not from my constituency. All such claims are baseless.
The fact that he was under the influence of alcohol can be officially recorded only after getting the report of his blood tests. Everything can be done only in accordance with the law. We are considering the concerns of the victims’ families. The accused is from my district, but there will be no attempt to save him,’ clarified Chennithala.
The family of Gopika, who died in the accident, had alleged that there is a move to sabotage the case and protect the accused. The family expressed concern that even after committing a serious crime, the accused, Suhail Sajeev, was sent to a juvenile home. The family told the media that they are worried about whether they would get justice. The accused is from the home minister’s constituency. The place has two ministers and expressed suspicion that political influence might be used to protect him.
