THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A solution for the travel woes of Jan Shatabdi. The Kannur Jan Shatabdi Express is set to offer a more comfortable travel experience, with push-back seats being reintroduced to address passengers’ long-standing complaints. The upgraded train will begin service today.
The railways have accepted passengers’ long-standing demand to replace the steep, L-shaped seats with more comfortable reclining seats.
After being fitted with LHB coaches, the Jan Shatabdi Express, the fastest train operating through Kerala after the Vande Bharat Express, had faced widespread criticism over its L-shaped seats, which passengers said were unsuitable for long journeys. In response, the Railways decided to upgrade the seating arrangements.
Passengers had complained that the existing seats caused severe neck and back pain, particularly during long-distance journeys. With the introduction of push-back seats, passengers travelling to distant destinations will be able to sit more comfortably and even sleep during the journey.
The decision is part of the railways’ ongoing modernisation efforts. The upgraded coaches have initially been introduced on the Kannur–Thiruvananthapuram Jan Shatabdi Express. The Railways has also announced that the same changes will be introduced on the Kozhikode–Thiruvananthapuram Jan Shatabdi Express in the next phase.
The new push-back seats also come with tray tables in front of passengers, providing space to place tea cups or bottles of drinking water.
