Tragedy strikes Portuguese Football; Quévin Castro dies after mid-match collapse

LISBON: Portuguese footballer Quévin Castro, 25, died after collapsing during a match in Portugal on Saturday. Castro collapsed early in a pre-season friendly between top-flight side Estrela da Amadora and third-tier club Real Sport Clube. He was a player for Real Sport Clube.

Castro received medical attention on the field after collapsing. The medical team attempted to revive him using a defibrillator, but their efforts were unsuccessful. He was then taken to hospital, where his death was confirmed.

The Lisbon Football Association confirmed his death and shared a condolence message on social media. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Born in Portugal, Castro grew up in Norfolk, England. He began his career at Sporting CP's academy before joining English club West Bromwich Albion in 2021. He made his debut in a Carabao Cup match against Arsenal.

He later played for Burton Albion, Gateshead and Notts County. Castro left West Bromwich Albion in 2023 and subsequently played for York City, Chippenham Town and Eastbourne Borough.
He had recently returned to Portugal and joined Real Sport Clube.
