BEIJING: Ten people were killed and 23 others were injured after a flash flood triggered by sudden heavy rain struck a popular tourist resort in northwestern China’s Gansu province.

The disaster struck the Shuangshimen tourist resort in Weiyuan county, which is administered by the city of Dingxi. According to reports, 174 people have been safely rescued from the area.

Shuangshimen is well known for its natural rock formations and mountain streams, making it a major destination for summer tourism. A significant number of visitors touring the area were caught in the sudden mountain torrent.

The Chinese government has issued heavy rain warnings across other parts of Gansu province as well. The severe weather coincides with Typhoon Noul making landfall in southern China this morning, putting southern regions on high alert. Heavy rainfall has been reported since this morning across portions of Gansu that lie outside the direct path of the typhoon.
