WASHINGTON: The United States initiated drastic steps with the intention of isolating Iran globally. In this new move, which is being described as an 'economic D-Day', the US decided to expand economic sanctions targeting countries and organisations that continue to have business relations with Iran.
The US set a specific deadline for countries around the world to stop financial transactions with Iran, or threatened to expel them from the global dollar exchange system. The same was parroted by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
Scott Bessent added that the US goal is to eliminate the financial resources of the Iranian regime. He made this known at a press conference held on Monday.
Meanwhile, Iran warned the United States about the mix of sanctions thrown at Tehran. The head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei, said in an interview that the US will not export a single drop of oil from the Gulf region if the sanctions continue. Iran's warning comes after US President Donald Trump announced tough economic measures and warned that countries doing business with Iran will face severe consequences. Mohsen Rezaei stated that any country that complies with the economic war waged by the US against the people of Iran will be considered an enemy state.
