Landslide inside tunnel in Sikkim; 10 people killed, Malayali among those missing

GANGTOK: At least 10 people were killed after a tunnel under construction collapsed following a landslide in South Sikkim. Several people, including a Malayali, are reported missing. The missing Malayali has been identified as Aneesh Mohan, a senior manager with NHPC and a native of Kottayam, Kerala. A geologist by profession, Aneesh is also a well-known science writer and science vlogger.

Officials said more than 18 people are believed to be trapped inside the tunnel. Rescue operations are underway under the leadership of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). So far, 12 people have been rescued from the site.

The accident took place at around 3 pm on Monday at the Samardung Tunnel in South Sikkim. The landslide completely blocked the entrance to the tunnel, trapping workers who were inside carrying out construction work. Rescue efforts have become more difficult due to a methane gas leak inside the tunnel. According to reports, some rescue personnel experienced dizziness and briefly lost consciousness while carrying out the operation. They were safely brought out and admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

With the tunnel entrance completely blocked, rescuers are facing major challenges in reaching those trapped inside. Power supply has been restricted in the area to support the rescue operation. The District Collector said the rescue mission remains difficult and that an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the landslide.
