KOCHI: More information has emerged about the accident in which three killed after a Mini Cooper car collided with a scooter at Athani in Nedumbassery early Sunday morning. The dead have been identified as Devika, Gopika and Ijaz, all aged just 21. They were working part-time at an antique shop in Thrikkakara while pursuing aviation studies.
The accident happened on the way back home as usual, after drinking tea with friends after work. Their friends were following them on two bikes. They are in shock after witnessing the horrific scene of the three, who had been returning happily, lying dead before their eyes just moments later.
The bodies of all the three have been kept at the Angamaly Taluk Hospital. They will be handed over to their relatives after the inquest and post-mortem procedures.
Excessive speed is believed to have caused the accident. Footage of the incident has also emerged. The police have registered a case of culpable homicide against Suhail Sajeev, who was driving the car. He has reportedly been charged under non-bailable provisions.
Tests found an excessive amount of alcohol in Suhail’s body, and police suspect that he may also have consumed other intoxicating substances. The police have obtained information stating that he had visited three bars and five-star hotels from yesterday afternoon and consumed alcohol. He had also recorded videos of these on his mobile phone.
Suhail Sajeev had arrived in Nedumbassery to pick up a friend who had landed at the airport. After the accident, he got out of the car and argued aggressively with local residents and others at the spot.
‘My father will take care of everything,’ Suhail allegedly said arrogantly after the crash that claimed the lives of three innocent people.
He had earlier shared videos on social media showing himself driving at speeds of around 220 kmph. Police reportedly described his conduct as resembling that of hardened criminals, citing what they characterised as repeated unlawful activities.
Suhail Sajeev, 18, is the son of Sajeev Jamaal and Nooha Sajeev, businesspeople from Allissery in Alappuzha. They own IHA Designs, a prominent clothing retail business with establishments in Alappuzha and Kochi.
Nooha and Suhail jointly make videos for IHA Designs’ social media pages, including Instagram, where the brand has millions of followers. Suhail is a BCom student of Rajagiri College. His family presently resides at Gold Tower, an apartment complex in Kakkanad.
Police said Suhail has been speaking arrogantly during interrogation. He will be produced before the magistrate today and remanded to judicial custody. The police have informed that strict action will be taken against him. The Motor Vehicles Department is also reportedly preparing to initiate action against Suhail.
