KOLLAM: Chathannoor MLA and BJP leader B.B. Gopakumar has received a death threat and was subjected to verbal abuse over a phone call by an unidentified individual. Following a complaint lodged by the legislator, the Chathannoor police registered a First Information Report (FIR) and commenced a detailed investigation.
The incident occurred at around 4:30 PM yesterday when an anonymous caller contacted the MLA regarding employment opportunities. When Gopakumar responded that there was no immediate way to provide a job, the caller abruptly disconnected. However, the individual called back shortly after and demanded the contact number of the Kazhakkoottam MLA.
Upon Gopakumar's refusal to share the requested phone number, the caller allegedly launched into a verbal tirade, hurling abuses at the legislator and issuing a death threat against him.
Following the incident, the MLA approached the Kollam City Police Commissioner with a formal complaint. Subsequent tracking by the police revealed that the SIM card used to make the threatening call is registered under the name of a resident of Ernakulam. Investigators noted that it remains unclear whether the registered owner of the SIM card made the call themselves or if another person was involved.
Apart from the local police, central intelligence agencies have also reportedly launched an inquiry into the matter to track down the caller and ascertain the motive behind the threat.
