'Home, hope, and happiness'; Amid rain threat, Malayalees revel in Onam mood

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Malayalees across the globe welcomed Thiruvonam with traditional floral carpets, new dress and a festive aura. The Prime Minister and President of India extended their greeting for the festival.

Extensive celebrations are ongoing in the state. Cultural organisations, clubs and residence associations are arranging events to celebrate the grandest day of the Onam festival. People, including expatriates, have come to the state to participate in the celebrations.

Thiruvonathoni, a Garuda-faced vessel bearing the provisions for Thiruvona Sadya on Thiruvonam Day, arrived at the temple in the morning with Onam offerings for the Aranmula Parthasarathy. The Palliyoda Seva Sangh and temple officials ceremonially received Thiruvonathoni. A large rush of devotees was witnessed in the temple from early morning today.

The same was true in Guruvayur too, as devotees in large numbers turned up to start Thiruvonam in all its divinity. Guruvayurappan was presented with Onapudava at 4:30 in the morning. In addition to the temple ceremonies, there will be a special Kashyap Sheeveli and Mela. Today, ten thousand people will be fed special prasadam.

Despite the festive spirits of Onam, rain remains a threat. A yellow alert has been issued for six districts today. There is also a warning of strong winds at a speed of 55 kilometres per hour. Rains have been ongoing in the capital city since morning. Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kannur and Kasaragod districts are in yellow alert today. There is also a ban on fishing on the coasts of Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep.
