Yet another organ donation in Kerala; Kollam councillor B Ajith Kumar to give new life to five

KOLLAM: In yet another case of organ donation in Kerala, the family of B. Ajith Kumar (53), a Congress councillor of the Kollam Corporation who was declared brain dead, has agreed to donate his organs. Ajith Kumar, who was also the chairman of the Kollam Corporation's Standing Committee on Sports and Education, had been undergoing treatment after suffering a stroke. A native of Kureepuzha in Thrikkadavoor, he was admitted to Travancore Medical College Hospital in Kollam on Sunday.

While undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit, he was declared brain dead early on Wednesday. Following his family's consent, it was decided to donate his organs through the Kerala government's Mrithasanjeevani organ donation programme.

Ajith Kumar's organs will be donated to five patients. He was unmarried and is survived by his siblings, B. Suresh Kumar and B. Ajitha Kumari.

The organs retrieved from Travancore Medical College Hospital will be transplanted at different hospitals. His liver will be donated to KIMS Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. One kidney will be transplanted at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital, while the other will be donated to Travancore Medical College Hospital in Kollam. His two corneas will be donated to the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology.
