Rains intensify in state again; six districts on yellow alert

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Rains are intensifying in the state again. Many places including the capital city received heavy rains Tuesday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has informed that there is a possibility of isolated rains with thunderstorms and strong winds with a speed of up to 40 kmph in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad in the next few hours.

Yellow alert has been issued for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod today. The possibility of isolated heavy rains has been predicted. Heavy rains are defined as a situation where 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rain is expected in 24 hours.

The extreme low-pressure area located over the north-west Bay of Bengal and the West Bengal-north Odisha coasts has intensified into an extremely severe low-pressure area. The IMD has informed that it is likely to move in a north-northwesterly direction and make landfall between Balasore and Canning on the West Bengal-North Odisha coast. The cyclonic circulation is located over the East Arabian Sea and the nearby Konkan coast. There is a possibility of rain in Kerala till July 31 due to this, informed the IMD.
