District rural police chief to investigate bus driver Siyad's death; report within seven days

KOLLAM: The Human Rights Commission directed the Kollam District Rural Police Chief to investigate the death of a private bus driver who allegedly went through third-degree torture at a police station before succumbing to injuries. The report should be submitted within seven days.

The concerned officials should appear in person with the investigation report at the sitting to be held at the commission's office at P.M.G. Junction in Thiruvananthapuram on August 5, said Commission Member V Geetha in the order.

Siyad (36), of ‘Kulathinkara Kadayil’, Perumpuzha, died at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital on July 24. An audio message alleging that Siyad was beaten by the police had gone viral the other day. It is alleged that Siyad, a bus driver on the Kundara-Kollam route, was taken into custody in connection with the disappearance of two children from his neighbourhood. Siyad, who was taken into custody on July 16, was released on the morning of July 17 after the missing student was found.

The audio of Siyad’s daughter confronting a police officer who allegedly assaulted Siyad at the police station went viral the other day. In the audio. Siyad’s daughter can be heard saying that her father confessed to her the name of the police officer who thrashed him badly.
